AI is becoming part of everyday life faster than many families expected. Children are hearing about it from school, YouTube, older siblings, friends, and the internet in general. That means the real question for many parents is no longer whether kids will encounter AI, but what kind of AI experience they will encounter first.
The upside is real
Used well, AI can support curiosity, help explain difficult topics in simpler language, and make screen time feel more active than passive. For some children, it can even make it easier to ask questions they might feel too shy to ask a teacher or parent right away.
The risks are real too
General-purpose AI tools are usually not designed around child development. They can sound confident while being wrong, respond in ways that are too mature for a young user, or normalize topics a child may not be ready to process alone. Even when the answer is not explicitly harmful, it can still be contextually inappropriate.
Why unrestricted access feels risky
Children do not yet have the same filters adults do. They may trust fluent answers too easily, revisit topics repeatedly, or miss the difference between something that sounds smart and something that is actually safe and accurate. Parents, meanwhile, often do not realize what their child has been exploring until much later.
So what should parents look for?
- Age-appropriate language and boundaries
- Clear safety filtering for sensitive or harmful topics
- Parent visibility without turning the whole experience into surveillance
- A product that treats trust as a core feature, not an afterthought
That is the standard we believe child-facing AI should be held to. Children will likely grow up around AI. The goal should not be panic or total denial. The goal should be a safer default.
